Migration helps build Australia's Population in 2008Tuesday, 30 September 2008 The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) latest figures show that immigration accounts for over 50% of Australia's net population growth over the past year to March 2008. Australia's population in 2008 is 21,283,000, an increase of 336,800 (or 1.6%) compared to 2007. Net immigration is approximately 200,000 which equates to 59.5% of Australia's population growth. Immigration figures show that while 230,000 people left the country, 430,000 came to live & work in Australia on permanent or temporary visas. This is a new record for Australia's immigration, and is indicative of the demand for migrants in the Australian community and workforce. Statistics also showed that Western Australia recorded the fastest population growth at 2.6%, followed by Northern Territory and Queensland, which grew by 2.2% over the last year. Western Australia has been actively seeking immigrants to meet labour demand.
