DIAC Supports Campaign Against Illegal Work Practices

Tuesday, 16 March 2010

The Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC), announced its support of a national campaign to educate employers in the horticulture industry about their obligations when employing overseas workers.

The joint Industry and Government campaign was announced by the Fair Work Ombudsman, and involves major industry bodies including the National Farmers Federation, Australian Workers Union, Horticulture Australia Council, and the Australian Industry Group.

In a media release, a spokesman for DIAC stated that "The department is committed to ensuring the integrity of our migration and visa programs. If people work illegally or if people employ illegal workers, they face being caught."

Employers are able to verify the legal working status of their employees through the Visa Entitlement Verification Online (VEVO) service. The service provides employers with the relevant identification details of prospective employees, with their consent, and will allow employers to quickly confirm that the potential employee is eligible to work in Australia.

Employers in Australia convicted of hiring illegal workers can face fines of up to $13,200 and up to 2 years imprisonment while companies can face fines of up to $66,000 per illegal worker.
