CANADIAN IMMIGRATION NEWS
Free English or French language lessons for new CanadiansMonday, 26 October 2009 Canada has started a program which will see vouchers for free language training sent to 2000 immigrants to encourage the learning of either language. The pilot project being launched will see vouchers sent randomly to new immigrants in Alberta, Ontario and Nova Scotia. Presently Citizenship and Immigration Canada offers language training to immigrants who have permanent residence; but this offer is limited to certain settlement agencies. The voucher which will be valid for one year will allow its holder access to a language course at an agency of their choosing. The vouchers, which have no cash value, will allow for convenience and flexibility when choosing a language centre and will more effectively assist new Canadians. New immigrants often find other more urgent matters like housing, work and family take priority over a language course. The voucher program is there as an outreach to new immigrants, not only to help them learn valuable language skills, but to become familiar with recourses in their community and to become a part of that community.
